Let’s talk truthy about bridesmaid dresses. They’ve come a long way from bright pink and blue taffeta (complete with dyed shoes to match)! But even so, let’s be honest. Has anyone ever worn their bridesmaid dress again? I have – when the bride was sweet enough to let all her ‘maids choose their own frocks in a specific color. When that happens it’s easy to find a bridesmaids dress you can wear again because the dress you pick is just your style.
But should it happen that you are a bride who isn’t a fan of the idea of letting bridesmaids choose their own dresses, there are still things you can do when choosing bridesmaids dresses to increase the odds your girls will wear their frocks more than just the once.
The hottest styles right now are still mostly sleeveless. Also very popular are column style dresses, floor length, halter top or straps criss-crossing over the back and asymmetrical. But keep in mind that anything floor length or overtly formal will be harder to re-wear than cocktail length bridesmaids dresses. That said, there are always exceptions!
These days, designers are getting very creative when it comes to color and fabric. It’s not just pale pinks and blues anymore. Platinum is very in at the moment, as well as very vibrant colors that would be at home on stylish peacocks. And yet earth tones and natural colors never go out of style and are especially versatile when it comes to everyday wear.
Accessories can really enhance the look of bridesmaid dresses – adding to the formality or funkiness. Statement necklaces add a bolder touch to relatively simlpe bridesmaid attire and look really stunning with all the sleeveless styles.
Floral looks and patterned bridesmaids dresses are appearing at growing numbers of weddings. Maybe because they can be worn again or maybe because we’re all finally over plain Jane matching styles. But if you love matching bridesmaids dresses – and that’s okay – think about having your ‘maids wear striking shoes in different colors and styles.
The vintage aesthetic is also still trendy, especially with the more “retro” style dresses. Rhinestone barrettes and combs are lending a stylish touch to bridal parties wearing vintage styles. What makes these dresses so re-wearable is that their silhouette is more fun and less formal.
1. Research before you shop! Don’t even browse. Instead, ask yourself what color, fabric, length, and silhouette you are picturing on your bridesmaids. Once you have a few ideas in your head, then you can start shopping for bridesmaids dresses.
2. Schedule your shopping trip well in advance. Getting all of your bridesmaids together can be a nightmare because of work, kids, hobbies, and distance. Use a survey app to find a time that works for everyone. That way everyone be there.
3. Or choose a chain or online store. Chances are if you’re not getting married straight out of college that some of your bridesmaids live out of town or out of state. Your ‘maids won’t all get the same dye lot if they’re wearing matching dresses but they will be able to get the same dress.
4. Shop with shapewear and shoes. Undies and footwear can make such a difference – not only to how a dress looks but also how it feels (especially when it’s body hugging or floor length). Make sure everyone comes equipped.
5. Be up front about your wants. Let your bridesmaids know in advance how much input you want. Are you going to shop around and want lots of suggestions or is the point of your outing to see everyone in the dress you’re 99.9% sure you’re going to pick?
6. Ask about discounts. Be brave! First question, does the price tag include tax and any shipping or alteration costs? If everyone is buying together that day, can you get a break on alterations? Bulk discount if you’re having a ton of bridesmaids? It never hurts to ask!
7. Bring cover ups. There may not be enough fitting rooms for all your ‘maids – without a robe or some other cover up, they’ll have to get redressed between try-ons. It’s a lot easier to throw on a robe between bridesmaids dresses.
8. Ask for suggestions. The staff has a lot of experiencing helping steer brides-to-be toward the perfect dresses, so use it. Tell them your ideas about color, fabric, length, and silhouette – and whether you want all your bridesmaids to match – and let them bring you some options.
9. Listen to your ‘maids. You want them to be comfortable on your wedding day, right? So if one of your bridesmaids hates her arms or is terrified to go strapless, but a kind bride and take their preferences into account.
10. Eat after. Brunch then bridesmaids dress shopping? Reverse that. No one feels or looks their best at a dress fitting after mimosas and a visit to the waffle bar.
11. Don’t hesitate to pick backups. No, not backup bridesmaids! Backup dresses. The turnaround time on bridesmaids dress orders can be insane and mix ups happen. Planning a wedding – and being a bridesmaid – is a lot less stressful when you don’t leave things to chance.
Looks like pretty in pink is giving way to pastels from periwinkle to lavender and beyond, and that’s just fine by us. Not that there’s anything wrong with pink – it’s still one of our faves, as this selection of After Six Bridesmaid dresses shows. It’s just that pastels are back in a big way – expect to see them at plenty of 2015 weddings – and we’re in love with how brides are using them.
While nothing says spring wedding like a bunch of bridesmaids dressed all in shades of post-winter blossoms there’s no reason not to explore pastels for winter weddings or in the summertime. Mint and peach both have grownup appeal – an important disclaimer for anyone worried that pastels are best left to newborn layettes.
From beach to garden or even indoors, pastel bridesmaid dresses are gorgeous. Especially when brides and their girls mix it up a little! Pastels are so warm and inviting every shade above harmonizes beautifully with the bride’s gold wedding gown.
Though the pastels worn by these bridesmaids look just as beautiful next to a more traditional white wedding gown.
Love cherries? Us, too. When we searched for cherry wedding inspiration, it’s not that surprising that cherry blossoms dominated. Who doesn’t love that gorgeous pale pink? But that’s not what we were looking for. We think it’s time to get BOLD with some totally saturated, gorgeous cherry red wedding inspiration that’ll knock your socks off. Ready? Here are six ways to incorporate cherry red into your wedding day:
A pop of color: You may be dressed all in white but that doesn’t mean you can’t add a pop of color to your wedding day ensemble in the form of a bridal jewelry set or an amazing pair of sunglasses.
Wrap your toes in red: Sunglasses too much? Then how about your bridal shoes? Wedding accessories are the perfect place to play with a little (or a lot) of color!
Your bridesmaids’ jewelry: In this red bridesmaid jewelry set the color of red ripe cherries isn’t the only inspiring thing. We love how the shape of the vivid pearls brings cherries to mind.
Or their dresses:Red bridesmaids’ dresses are amazing already- cherry red bridesmaids’ dresses? To die for. We’re not going to say they’ll ever wear them again but pick the right cut and they might!
A tasty treat: Cherry red is more than just a color when you use it as flavor inspiration for your reception meal or wedding cake. Great caterers will get creative when it comes to using cherry – think savory foods infused with this awesome flavor.
The cake: Not a fan of cherry? Bright red cherry blossoms – which, yes, isn’t the norm – on your cake will wow your guests.
Cherry red probably won’t be the dominant color in your wedding color scheme but it is literally one of the most beautiful accent colors there is. If you’re still looking for that perfect accent color, consider it!

SO you’ve found a dress – or batch of bridesmaids’ dresses – that looks amazing on everyone from your best bestie to your big sister. Your ‘maids LOVE it. But if you think your work is done, think again. (Sorry, ladies.) Now it’s time to accessorize that perfect gown with some bridesmaid jewelry. Here are some tips to help you do just that:
Let the Dress Be Your Guide
You likely already know that necklaces should not hang down past necklines and bracelets seldom harmonize well with long sleeves, but the overall fanciness and style of your bridesmaids’ dresses can also help you choose jewelry and accessories. Very formal bridesmaids dresses demand bigger, bolder baubles.
Think of the Photos
Very ornate bridesmaid jewelry may not photograph particularly well when worn by a flock of identically dressed ‘maids. Some jewelry will look better in low light or candlelight while other pieces shine brightest in natural daylight.
Give Them a Little Freedom
Even if you don’t want to choose bridesmaid jewelry, you still have the final say when it comes to what your ladies will be wearing on your big day. You can dictate parameters. Crystal bridesmaid jewelry. A pearl wedding jewelry set. Colored bridesmaid jewelry. It’s your call, and having a few boundaries may actually make it easier for your bridesmaids to shop for their own accessories.
Keep It Simple
If you want to, that is. Bright dresses with something simple like a pair of understated stud earrings and a simple drop pendant necklace can make the bride, with her more ornate accessories, pop. Especially in the pictures. Bridesmaid jewelry can be barely there and still be impactful.
Or Go Big
Sometimes more is more, and your wedding day is not the day to stay small because you’re afraid of being too flashy. Flash away and let your bridesmaids do the same with big CZ sets or striking vintage look pieces that really stand out.
Make It a Gift
Your bridesmaids’ jewelry can be the gifts you give them to thank them for being a part of your big day, but in that case do your ladies a solid and choose something they can wear again (even if only for big events). They’ll appreciate not having yet another bridesmaids expense and you don’t have to worry about their jewelry. It’s win-win!

As a bride-to-be, your responsibility for styling hair, makeup, wedding accessories, and clothing goes beyond your own look. You may have to find the perfect little flower girl dress and even help your groom choose his and his groomsmen’s suits. And of course, if you’re like most brides, you’ll be choosing the bridesmaids dresses your besties wear when they precede you down the aisle. This can be, how should I put this… awful, terrible, and stressful? You want your girls to look good. No, great! But they’re all different body types, the wedding is at a weird time of day, the venue you’ve chosen doesn’t clearly dictate what level of formal wear you should be aiming for, and of course, your maid of honor is knocked up.
I know, right?
But let me tell you that sometimes the easiest way to make any decision is to start small. You don’t need to choose a bridesmaids dress designer right this second. Or even a color or a cut. Start by simply choosing between long bridesmaids dresses and short bridesmaids dresses.
There are, of course, (for lack of a better word) benefits to both.
Short bridesmaids dresses may be easier to move in and more comfortable in the summer and late spring. They’re also fun and sweet and if the cut is right, just a little bit sassy.
Short bridesmaids dresses at a formal(ish) affair? It has been done and it can be a lot of fun!
Of course, beware the short bridesmaids dress on the short bridesmaids – many a ‘maid has complained in secret about having to wear a frock that makes her look like a munchkin. If you go short, let your bridal party control how they hem so they get the most flattering look out of the length.
Long dresses will (ahem) dress up your wedding – they’re generally perceived as more formal by guests. They may also be warmer if you’re having a fall or winter wedding.
And depending on the cut, a long gown can hide a multitude of sins for those who are worried about body image. Some bridesmaids may simply feel more comfortable in a dress that conceals more than it reveals.
The downside comes in the form of a price tag. For better or for worse, long dresses will be more expensive. Not to mention more difficult to find if you’re letter your ladies pick their own gowns.
And with all that simplification out of the way, I’m going to say that I don’t care what Say Yes to the Dress Bridesmaids’ Lori says – in the year 2014 it is perfectly acceptable to mix and match lengths the same way it is perfectly okay to mix and match dresses. This is not prehistory. Your ‘maids are not there to confuse demons into snatching one of them instead of you. If you love how mismatched bridesmaids look, then mismatch to your heart’s content!
