Air temperature and humidity: Did you know some fabrics can literally wilt in the heat? I, for one, didn’t until I started researching this post. If you’re getting married outdoors in somewhere like Florida look at lightweight gowns first. Fabrics like cotton eyelet will keep you cooler, more comfortable, and looking great for longer. On the other hand, do you really want to freeze your buns (and your bust) off in a strapless gowns in the dead of winter? A jacket works wonders out of doors but some ceremony venues can be surprisingly frosty.
The Mood: Kicky little 1950s style wedding dresses and simple pearl wedding jewelry looks amazing when the backdrop is city hall. A longer-than-long cathedral train? Not so much, but inside an actual cathedral and you’re rocking it. The one crossover option seems to be the basic sheath. You can dress it up with your bridal jewelry or wear it dressed down, Bohemian style, making it the chameleon of the wedding gown world.
Your backdrop: Will you be walking down the aisle in a church, a museum, or down on the farm? Will you dance the night away in a barn floor or on an old fashioned parquet floor? If it’s the former (and the barn hasn’t been entirely converted into an event venue) pass on the long, lace train and wear a lace wedding veil instead. In any weather, outdoor weddings call for dresses that won’t attract too much schmutz.
The laws of the land: Culture, religion, and even a family’s own culture can dictate what is appropriate and what isn’t when it comes to bridal fashion. Some religious faiths demand that brides wear modest gowns – and what modest means in any given faith can be quite different. One church may have different guidelines from another even within the same faith! Lots and lots of bridal jewelry is customary in some cultures. The less is more approach in others. When in doubt, ask or risk committing a faux pas that’s captured forever in your wedding photos!

Can I just tell you how much I am loving the return to simplicity that I have been seeing at this year’s weddings? While there will always be over-the-top everything from ten-tier cakes to wedding jewelry so heavy it gives the bride a migraine, it’s nice to see so many things that are just plain – well – nice. Doable for those of us who weren’t born with the Colin Cowie gene, even.
Wedding centerpieces for reception tables tend to be at the forefront of this return to all things simple – possibly because if you’re not a natural born designer or hiring an all purpose planner who’s wrangling the flowers for you, centerpieces can be tricky. Too small and they look dinky on a ten-person table. Too big and your guests are knocking the salt cellar onto the floor every time they take a bite.
But when you keep things simple, it’s a lot easier for the lay-bride to see what works and what doesn’t. Nothing too fussy. Mostly a lot of glass and flowers and candles – all of the kinds of things you can grab at a craft store on the cheap, in fact. Not that DIY wedding centerpieces have to look cheap, mind you. Some of the least expensive weddings I’ve been to have been some of the most arresting and amazing visually thanks to brides who put in the time.
If you’re thinking you’d rather put in the time than spend the money for gorgeous wedding centerpieces, here are some ideas I’m loving right now:
I can’t imagine these are actually drinking glasses but they do look an awful lot like drinking glasses. One bloom per glass and you have the perfect centerpiece for a long rectangular table.
Bedazzling glass jars and vases was all the rage on Pinterest a while back so you’ll have no trouble finding a how-to. Pick the right receptacle and you can once again get away with one bloom per.
Not a fan of flowers? Simple sticks and floating candles make for surprisingly striking centerpieces.
Or ditch the twigs and go for greenery. Wouldn’t this setup be lovely with succulents or cacti?
Here’s another idea – twin greenery into a vine and trail it along the table. A few tea lights in glass complete the look. It’s very fresh and in keeping with the trend toward more botanicals!

Did I say it couldn’t get any simpler? I lied. Beach stones and lilies are a perfect pairing.
It might take some time to collect all the tiny glass bottles you need to mimic this look, but don’t you think the results will be worth it?

An at home wedding can sound like a dream come true for the bride-to-be who doesn’t want to deal with the hassle of planning a big, fancy ceremony and reception. But sacrificing some of the glitz and glamour that a gorgeous venue can bring to a wedding doesn’t necessarily mean that wedding planning will get any simpler. Sometimes planning a backyard wedding can be more complicated – and even more expensive – than putting together a traditional wedding at an event venue. Here’s why:
The necessary extras: The nice thing about many wedding venues is that everything is included. The linens. The bridal chamber. The staff. Someone else is handling all the different rentals and professionals. Compare that to a backyard wedding which has to be planned from the ground up – it’s the bride-to-be’s responsibility to find servers, linens, trash receptacles, and more. If you’ve never planned a party for 100+ people you may be surprised at all the things you need to buy and rent.
Bathrooms: If the backyard where you’re thinking of saying your vows and partying down is attached to a house with 4+ bathrooms then disregard this item. But while 75 guests and two bathrooms could work – and probably would work – do you want to take risks? Residential plumbing can get overwhelmed pretty easily, which means that to stay on the safe side you’re going to need to pay for extra accommodations. And then find some place out of the way to park them.
Rain or shine: Weather is unpredictable – you may live somewhere where it hardly ever rains and the random storm picks your wedding day to show up. It may be unseasonably sunny and warm or cold. Will all of your wedding guests fit in your home? Would you want them in there? Renting a tent, even a small one, and getting it set up can be pricey and complicated (depending on what your yard is like) but it’s a must.
Refreshments: Getting food and drink (and the cake) to your backyard wedding isn’t the issue. Prep is. Will there be enough space for the caterers, etc., to prep your food? Somewhere safe to store the cake? Somewhere to put the drinks? Be realistic about how much space you have for prep and adjust your choices and expectations accordingly.
The cleanup: This is a big one! At a hired venue, you don’t have to worry about any of the cleanup – your job is to have fun and leave before the last dance. At a backyard wedding, particularly when it’s in your own backyard, you (or your loved ones) will have to decide ahead of time who will do the cleaning up and with what – rented trash barrels? – and when.
None of this means, of course, that you should stop planning a backyard wedding in favor of renting a venue. Brides and grooms just need to be aware that there’s more to planning a backyard wedding than deciding to host at home. There’s a lot to think about and a lot of things that will be on your plate so while we’d love it if we could say that it’s as simple and as easy as buying wedding jewelry we can’t. It can be pretty hard but for a lot of couples, also totally worth the extra trouble.

When a bride-to-be tells us she’s planning a casual wedding, what she often really means is that she’s planning a simple wedding. A truly casual wedding – and make no mistake, they do happen – might have people showing up in jeans, coolers of Bud, a groom in board shorts, and the bride herself wearing nothing more complicated than a sundress. Think backyard barbecue weddings without the dressing up that backyard barbecue weddings usually receive.
Simple weddings, on the other hand, are about dressed-down ambiance and understated elegance. Typically, simplicity begins by stripping a ceremony and reception down to their barest elements and then building them back up again very carefully using a minimalist, free-spirited aesthetic as a guide. Think supermarket flowers arranged by the bride herself in an assortment of carefully chosen vintage milk glass – all thoughtfully thrifted, of course. Simple sheath dresses, perfectly tailored, on both the bride and her maids. A cake that looks just rustic enough to pass for homemade even though its look was specifically requested by the couple.
In wedding parlance, simple can mean almost anything. You know it when you see it, we think. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles, but that doesn’t mean that the bridal accessories, venue, refreshments, clothing, décor, and transportation didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
Wedding invitations are one area where couples mistake simple for casual. A truly casual wedding invitation would be one written by the bride-to-be herself – and we all know that ain’t happening. A simple wedding invitation, on the other hand, is one that employs uncomplicated language and isn’t fussy. No tissue paper inserts or gold embossing here. Think letterpress invites on plain (yet quality) cardstock. Maybe with a quirky graphic custom designed for the couple for good measure. And the wording? Straightforward, like so:

If this all sounds wonderful, you’re in good company. More and more couples are opting not for casual wedding invitations but rather for simple ones. It makes sense. Weddings, though no less expensive, are certainly getting less fussy as time marches on. And we like that.

On top of becoming a treasured keepsake, your finished painting may appreciate in value over time and will certainly be a family heirloom that outlives you. What’s also very cool about having a live event painter at your wedding is that watching the artist at work can be yet another diversion for guests. When your loved ones aren’t actually gathered around the painter doing his or her thing, they’ll probably be talking about your choice to have a real live art pro in situ. How quickly can you plan a wedding? It’s not a question that many brides-to-be ask themselves, considering the average length of engagement is roughly 15 months. Still, plenty of couples are on the expedited ceremony and reception plan where time is of the absolute essence. We won’t get into why there’s a need for speed because there are just oodles of reasons – suffice it to say, sometimes you need to met all those wedding planning deadlines – from booking a venue to choosing wedding jewelry – sooner rather than later.
For many, the answer is hiring a wedding planner. While hiring a pro to plan a wedding can be a big expense, it doesn’t have to be and in cases where time is of the essence, it can end up saving the couple money (not to mention time) in the long run. That’s because a planner will have the inside track on services and professionals who have openings on the wedding date in question. Some vendors will charge a premium for a wedding that’s a mere month or two away, while most will simply be unavailable. Planners have the glorious ability to find those who aren’t booked and get a good deal.
But let’s say a planner just isn’t in your budget… what then? Then you need to figure out a timeline that will help you realize your dream wedding without freaking out. Step one is still going to be figuring out your budget and whether the number is huge or tiny, it’s an important one. Step two? Finding a venue and reserving it ASAP. Preferably one that can be used as both the ceremony and reception spaces and will come decorated. Then you need to book your priority vendors. Realize that you may not get your first choice pros on your schedule.
These are the three most important things you’ll need to do when planning a wedding fast! Everything else, from choosing a wedding dress (like the Sandals wedding dress in the pic) to buying your wedding jewelry to picking your bridesmaids can be done in a more relaxed way without gumming up the works. Which isn’t to say you can drag your heels, but once you have the big three under control your wedding is pretty much in the bag whether it’s in six weeks or six months.
Just remember that when you’re rushing it, you’re probably going to have to make sacrifices. Maybe that will mean having a Sunday afternoon wedding instead of a Saturday evening affair. Your dream of walking down the aisle in a designer dress may not be realized. And second choices may have to become your top choices. The payoff is that you get to have your wedding when you want to or need to – and you miss out on months of wedding planning stress. That’s what we call winning!
